Television and Radio in Tajikistan — An Important Factor in the Development of the Information Space

Today, radio and television hold a special place among the mass media outlets of the Republic of Tajikistan. This sector has developed alongside the country’s statehood and has evolved into a comprehensive public and private media system. In modern literature, mass media — including television and radio — are often referred to as the “fourth branch of power” due to their significant role in shaping public opinion and ensuring social oversight.

The information space of the Republic of Tajikistan is currently represented by various television and radio networks, each operating with its own format and direction to produce programs for different segments of society. According to official data, more than 90 television channels, radio stations, and audiovisual production studios operate in the country, divided into public and private sectors.

The history of television in Tajikistan dates back to 1959, when the first television broadcast was launched in Dushanbe. This event marked the beginning of a new stage in the development of mass media in the country and laid the foundation for the formation of modern television networks.

In order to improve public access to digital television services, the “State Program for Digital Television Broadcasting for 2026–2030” has been adopted in the Republic of Tajikistan.

Within the media landscape, television and radio serve not only as sources of information but also as reflections of the real life of society. They play an important role in covering events and promoting culture, language, and national values.

Several state television channels operate in the country, including Tajikistan, Safina, Bahoriston, Jahonnamo, Varzish, Sinamo, TV Dushanbe, as well as the specialized channels “Tourism and Folk Crafts” and “Science and Nature.” These networks focus on covering the political, social, cultural, and sports life of society.

Alongside them, private television channels such as TV Vatan, TV Mavji Istiqlol, and other regional broadcasters also operate actively, contributing to the development of the country’s information space through informative and entertainment programs.

The radio sector is likewise represented by numerous networks, including Radio Tajikistan, Radio Sadoi Dushanbe, Radio Farhang, as well as private radio stations such as Asia-Plus Radio, Radio Vatan, and others.

In the modern era, radio is recognized as an important spiritual pillar of society, playing a significant role in covering current events, strengthening the information environment, supporting state development, enhancing national identity, broadening public outlook, and reinforcing national unity.

During the years of independence, new television networks were established, significantly expanding the country’s media space. In particular, Safina TV was established on September 3, 2005, launching its activities with cultural and entertainment programs. TV Dushanbe was founded pursuant to a decision of the Mayor of Dushanbe dated September 6, 2006, with a focus on covering the life of the capital city.

Furthermore, in 2022, the specialized channel “Tourism and Folk Crafts” was established with the primary goal of promoting Tajikistan’s tourism potential and traditional crafts at the international level.

Overall, television and radio in Tajikistan are not only means of information dissemination but also an important part of the country’s social and cultural life, playing a significant role in shaping public opinion.
