ISTARAVSHAN – A CENTER OF HISTORY, CULTURE AND TOURISM

Istaravshan, one of the oldest cities in Tajikistan, plays a significant role in promoting entrepreneurship, preserving traditional crafts, creating employment opportunities and improving the living standards of its residents. Its rich historical and cultural heritage, combined with a growing tourism infrastructure, has made the city an attractive destination for both domestic and international visitors.

The city possesses considerable potential for tourism development and is capable of accommodating more than 1,000 tourists per day. One of its most prominent attractions is the historical and cultural complex “Qalai Mug”. During the years of independence, a modern amphitheater with a capacity of 5,100 seats, more than 80 pavilions for handicraft exhibitions and sales, and facilities for showcasing national traditions have been established at the site.

The Qalai Mug Museum, located within the complex, preserves valuable archaeological findings and historical artifacts that reflect the rich civilization and cultural legacy of the Tajik people. International visitors show great interest not only in the city’s ancient monuments but also in Tajik culture, customs and traditions.

Istaravshan has successfully preserved the architectural characteristics of the medieval era. Extensive construction and beautification projects implemented during the independence period have given the ancient city a modern appearance while maintaining its historical identity. To support tourism development, the modern “Kiropol” Hotel operates near the Qalai Mug complex, providing comfortable accommodation and services for visitors.

The continuous development of tourism infrastructure, support for traditional craftsmanship and improvement of tourism services demonstrate Istaravshan’s strong potential to be recognized as one of Tajikistan’s leading tourist destinations on the international stage.
