THE DUSHANBE WATER PROCESS. What issues will be discussed at the Fourth High-Level International Conference?

A number of key areas will be at the center of discussions during the Fourth High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018–2028.” These include the sustainable management of water resources, ensuring safe access to water and sanitation, the impact of climate change and glacier melting on water security, energy, agriculture, and the risks of floods and landslides, particularly in the Central Asian region. The conference will also focus on strengthening cooperation and water diplomacy through the use of the “Dushanbe Water Process” to coordinate countries’ positions ahead of the 2026 United Nations Water Conference, as well as fostering partnerships, new commitments, and joint projects within the framework of the Water Action Agenda. Furthermore, special emphasis will be placed on engaging the private sector, the scientific community, youth, and women in addressing water-related challenges, including through dedicated forums focused on investment, innovation, and socio-environmental solutions.

According to available information, more than 2,500 participants from over 100 countries are expected to attend this international event. The conference will bring together heads of state and government, ministers and other high-level representatives, as well as institutions of the United Nations, international organizations, financial institutions, the scientific community, civil society, youth, and the private sector.

It should be recalled that the Fourth High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018–2028” will take place from May 25 to 28 in the capital of Tajikistan, the city of Dushanbe.

It is worth noting that at the national level, from 2018 to the present, three High-Level International Conferences (in 2018, 2022, and 2024) have been held in Dushanbe in cooperation with the United Nations. This series of conferences, known as the “Dushanbe Water Process,” has become a sustainable platform for discussing issues related to water resources, sanitation, and climate change.
