Tajikistan is one of the countries with abundant water resources. Approximately 947 rivers flow through the republic, with a total length of 28,500 kilometers.
In particular, the Amu Darya, Syr Darya, Panj, Zarafshan, Vakhsh, and Kofarnihon rivers are among the most important rivers in the country. Currently, Tajikistan uses only about 10 percent of the water in the Aral Sea basin, 15.4 percent of the water in the Amu Darya basin, and 7.8 percent of the water in the Syr Darya basin for its own needs.
The majority of the country’s water resources are glaciers, rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and groundwater. Rivers are of great importance for the development of the economy, agriculture, electricity generation, and the provision of drinking water to the population. At the same time, they also create favorable conditions for the development of the tourism industry.
The beautiful natural landscapes, river banks, high mountains, and unique nature of Tajikistan provide ample opportunities for attracting domestic and foreign tourists. On the banks of some rivers, there is an opportunity to develop eco-tourism, water sports, nature recreation, and mountaineering. Many tourists travel to Tajikistan to admire the beautiful scenery of mountain rivers, including the Varzob, Iskander Darya, and Fondarya rivers.
